I took my truck in to have my intermittent A/C diagnosed. They called me within a couple of hours to let me know that they found a faulty pressure cycling switch. They quoted me $265 to replace the switch and then evacuate & recharge the system. $45 for the switch, $55 for labor, and $132 to evacuate & recharge the refrigerant, then add taxes and their “shop supplies”. Being very knowledgeable in auto repairs I knew something just wasn’t right with this and it was obvious they were trying to con me! First of all, this $45 OEM switch can be purchased directly across the street at AutoZone for $15. It’s very easily accessible from the top of the engine compartment and literally takes less than 5 minutes and a wrench to replace. So they wanted $55 for 5 minutes of labor? That would be $660/hour! Then the fact that they were going to charge me to evacuate and recharge the system is BS! Replacing the pressure cycling switch DOES NOT require an evacuation and recharge since no refrigerant is lost during the replacement. I’m guessing they weren’t going to do it anyway because it wasn’t needed and were just going to charge me, thinking I wouldn’t know. Needless to say, I did not have them complete the work and I repaired it myself by spending $15 at AutoZone and 5 minutes installing it. I give Firestone 2 stars because they, at least, diagnosed the fault accurately.
